Having initially scanned the first edition, after watching a recent webinar with Penny Peck on WebJunction about spicing up storytime, I decided to read the second edition in more detail. The differences between the first and second editions are the discussions of newer storytime practices, like dance parties, yoga storytimes, and using apps or e-books in storytime.

Crash Course in Storytime Fundamentals, 2nd Edition

Once again, Peck's writing is friendly and easy to read as she lays out the foundation for storytime categories by age, but there are also new categories like multicultural or sensory storytimes. She discusses what is developmentally appropriate for each group and what librarians can expect, with recommendations for themes, books, songs and fingerplays, and other resources.

The latter part of the book explains nuts and bolts processes of storytime, from laying out expectations, encouraging early literacy practices to parents, and using volunteers. The last hundred pages is an appendix and bibliography with theme suggestions, complete with books and crafts.

For anyone looking to start a storytime at their library, this book would be all you need; for experienced storytime professionals, there are new ideas to consider that make this book worth reading. I love this book. It's my go-to when I want book suggestions for unusual themes.
